Long Yellow

Walk sign flashing on and off before it turns to
Don't or Can't or just plain Won't

So long the green
expecting any instant for the change
that when the yellow came
as promised there was still
the thought to stick and glow
forever so we'd never have to see it

screeching
tires burning
seat belts snapping
lurching forward
bags and books and purses flying

to a silent
shaking
just or almost barely
over the line

come

to a full
completely
final

gradually
to an all at once
red light
lights out
hold your horses

stop.

i.e. how our great grand aunt wife sister cousin mother-friend
died
most peacefully
in her looked like
sleep

I was just referred to Mary Gill Smith's blog in reference to the Beim family. Both of our families knew each other when we lived in Wesport from 1955 to 1957. Sadly, I was present when Jerrold and Seth were killed the morning of March 2, 1957. For a half century I have wondered about Andy and how he made out in life. Thanks to Brooks Peters' assistance in putting me in contact with Andrew, it appears closure to that tragic morning is finally coming. I have also made some amazing friends whom I hope someday to meet in person. Thanks Mary, Brooks and Sharon and Andrew Beim for allowing me to come into your lives. ''Larry in Westport''
